The animal of the month
Warthog
It looks like a grey skinned pig with a long mane of hair running from the back of the head to the top of the hips.
Both male and females have canine tusks, but those of the male are larger, averaging 20 cm for the upper tusk.
Weights are 60-100 kg for the male and 45-75 kg for the female.
Warthog grunt and males make a clicking grunt when pursuing an oestrus female.
They are often seen on the savannas, grassland or semi-aid bush area where they can find short green grass to eat.
Adults are preyed by lions and leopards, and at times by hyenas and hunting dogs.
The young are killed by all the larger predators and larger eagles, with up to 50% mortality during the first year.
