Before you are departing to a Safari in Africa, make sure you are well prepared. On this page we have listed information about the most important things you should think about.
Visa
To get into Tanzania a visa is required. The visa is possible to get by the Tanzanian embassy in your home country or when you arrive at the airport inTanzania.
Passport
A passport is needed to get to Tanzania. The Passport have to be valid until six months after you have come back home.
Reservation
Laris Safaris Ltd. reservates the right to change lodge bookings if needed. The alternative lodges will be at the same standard as the lodges originally booked.
Health and Vaccination
Before your trip you have to get the basic vaccinations. We also recommend vaccination against the Yellow fever. Malaria prophylaxis is another of our recommendations. Contact your doctor in due time prior to your departure.
First-aid Kit
Of course there is a first-aid kit in the car during the safari. On the lodges and the hotels there are staff trained in nursing. Even if there is access to nursing it is a god idea to bring an own first-aid kit.
This kit should contain painkillers, Imodium and Malaria prophylaxis. Besides that, it can be useful to bring a lot of sun lotion and some anti-mosquito preparation.
Water
Only drink bottled water during your safari, and drink a lot!
Hygiene
All Hotels and Lodges has got a high Standard and it is no problem to eat the food, but take it easy wiht cold dairy products.
Travel Allowance
There are cash dispensers in the bigger cities, but it is nothing we recommend you to trust on.
Our recomendation is to exchange into low denominations of US-Dollars before travelling to Tanzania. It is possible to do exchange between US-Dollar and Tanzanian Shilling at the lodges. It is also possible to exchange traveller's cheque at the lodges.
Tip
The tourists in Tanzania are most often expected to pay tip to drivers, guides, porters and sometimes waitresses and waiters. The expected tip to a driver or a guide is about 10 US-Dollar per group per day. A reasonable tip to waiters or waitresses is to round the bill.
Luggage
It can be expensive to travel with to heavy luggages so try not to bring too heavy luggage. It is also recommended to pack in soft bags, because it is easier to pack into the safari car.
Photographing
Always ask permission before photographing people and always respect their wishes. Do not take any photos of buildings connected to the government and the military, such as airports, post offices, banks and train stations.
When on safaris, please do not take any photos at the local people unless they have agreed. If you are unsure if it is ok to take a photo, ask the driver or the guide.
Mobile Phones
In some places it is possible to call from a mobile phone during the safari. Pre pay cards do not work in Tanzania, subscription is required.
Insurance
Make sure you have a travel insurance before departing.
Others
A flashligt can be useful to bring while some of the lodges do not provide electricity during the nights.
It is interesting to bring a map and point out the lodges and parks during the safaris. Besides this it is also interesting to bring a piece of paper and write a diary during the safari.
If you know you have to use electrical equipment, bring an adapter. The adapters shall be british style three-square-pin or two-round-pin plug adapter.
